Class Videos 9/2

So I just re-viewed the two videos from class, "Epic 2015" and "The Future of Communications," as well as "Did You Know 2.0." It made me realize how dependent our society is on technology now, and it can only grow. I mean I'm no exception to the dependence, but it's kind of creepy to think that the time is quickly approaching for when the computer is our only outlet of information.

Anyway, a lot of the content in the videos I found to be believable. It is truly only a matter of time for a completely digital society, where Google and Amazon rule the world, and there is a computer application that lives your life for you so you don't have to--sounds cool, right? Not to me! In the "Did You Know" video, it said that many people in college are being taught skills and such for jobs that won't exist until after graduation. I think it's neat and interesting that we can foreshadow technology to determine what will happen next.

There is no doubt in my mind that the world would be a worse place if we hadn't made huge strides in technology over the past few decades...but I do wonder if we are reaching the point of too much of a good thing?

Very interesting post. I've always been worried about our general dependency upon computers as a society—I mean, yes, I agree that it's absolutely awe-inspiring how far computers have come in the past five, ten, fifteen years, but we're damn near obsessed. I went camping for a week last year, completely unable to access the Internet, and when we came back to civilization, I actually got choked up the first time I opened Outlook. I've even named every one of my computers and mourned their passing. And, judging from the habits of my geeky tech friends, I know I'm not alone.

Not to say that there'll be a black market for stolen memories or anything anytime soon, but still. Definitely something to think about.

The time mayy be approaching where the computer will be our only outlet of information. I just read an article on CNN about the future of libraries (http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/09/04/future.library.technology/index.html) It's weird thinking that soon, as is predicted by many people, books will be completely digitized. What would happen if we had one huge, mega crash or something? and all our histories were lost? that may sound like the prospective plot of some silly sci-fi film or something. :) but sometimes i wonder. also, i'm a tactile romantic as well, cover and folded pages type of girl.

It's time for us to concern about the other side of the coin. Just as people worry about the disaterous effect that Industrialization may bring to this world. I think this is the right time to realize the situation and take control of it. As long as we acknowledge that too much of the Internet and modern technology lead us to a scary future, I believe that there is chance to turn the wheel around.

I agree with what you said about advancing technology possibly being too much of a good thing. It irks me to think that something like Prometeus could actually exist and become something the average person uses everyday. Its good that people are realizing the dark side to such rapic advances in technology and communication.
